Making Memories

Arranger Denise Helm from the West Park branch certainly personifies these qualities with her ongoing work in the local community.
On behalf of the West Park branch Denise provides cakes for a monthly Memory café at St Chads Parish Hall, Headingley. The cafe supports and is attended by people who have Dementia, their carers or nursing home staff. There are usually up to 20 people in attendance at any time. The cafe is staffed by members of the church.
Denise said, “I was invited to attend the cafe and was asked to provide ice cream wafers, syrups and chocolate flakes as the theme for that day was going to be based on memories of ice cream. Everyone enjoyed a nice cup of tea or coffee whilst gentle music played in the background. I helped out by making hot drinks, washing up and chatting to the clients, carers and volunteers
This was followed by a quiz about ice cream, when it was invented, identifying different flavours etc. It is such a valuable community resource, and we are proud to support it”.
The café is held on the second Monday of every month 1:30pm-3:00pm in the small hall of St Chad’s Parish Centre and is open to people with Dementia and their partners or carers, together with anyone who would like to come and share memories, cost is £1 per session.
